考研英语2010年阅读理解Text 3原文如下:
In the 19th century, the United States was a nation of farmers. It was a nation of people who were, in the main, poor, and who were trying to make a living from the land. They were not a nation of people who owned land; they were a nation of people who rented land, or borrowed land, or bought land on credit. They were a nation of people who were working hard, and who were not making much money.
This was the situation that led to the Populist Movement. The Populist Movement was a movement that wanted to give the farmers more power in the government. The farmers were tired of being ignored by the government. They were tired of being taxed without representation. They were tired of seeing their children go to school and then not being able to get a job. They were tired of seeing their farms go broke because they could not get loans from the banks.
The Populist Movement wanted to change this. They wanted to give the farmers more power in the government. They wanted to make the government more responsive to the needs of the farmers. They wanted to make the government more democratic.
The Populist Movement was not a successful movement. It did not achieve its goals. But it did change the way that the government thought about farmers. It did change the way that the government thought about the economy. It did change the way that the government thought about democracy.
The Populist Movement was a movement that was led by farmers. It was a movement that was about farmers. But it was also a movement that was about all of the people in the United States. It was a movement that was about the future of the United States.
