In the 1960s, after the success of the Jet Age, airlines had to look for new ways to attract passengers. One method was to raise the standard of in-flight service. But in the 1970s, passenger numbers declined as a result of high fuel costs, and the airlines reduced flights. Planes had become too big and too fast to be economically efficient, and with so many taking to the air, competition was fierce. As a result, costs were cut, and passenger numbers fell still further.
