In the United States, the idea of personal choice relative to health behavior is strong, but in other cultures, it is not as clear-cut.
Although Americans tend to be overly concerned with their weight, they do not necessarily think about the effects that those excess pounds have on their health. Many Americans, for example, do not see being overweight as a problem that needs to be tackled. They think that their body weight is largely determined by their genes and that this problem is therefore not within their control. They also believe that their health is largely determined by external factors, such as whether the water they drink is clean and whether the food they eat is nourishing and safe.
These attitudes are reflected in the fact that the United States has one of the highest obesity rates in the world. More than two-thirds of the adults are overweight. This is not just a problem for the overweight individuals themselves. It also affects the whole society. For example, the costs of treating obesity and related health problems are enormous. The fact that so many Americans are overweight has become a national concern.
In the past few decades, however, there has been a growing awareness of the role that personal health behaviors play in maintaining good health. People are beginning to understand that health is more than the absence of disease. It also involves healthy behaviors, such as eating a well-balanced diet, getting regular physical exercise, and not smoking. People are beginning to realize that their personal behaviors can affect their health in significant ways.
There is also a growing awareness that the family and the school are critical in influencing a child's health behavior. Many people believe that the family is the primary social institution responsible for transmitting cultural values, including health-related values. If the family is unable to teach a child the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and the importance of good nutrition, the school can provide that information.
In addition, many people believe that the school environment itself can have a significant impact on students' health behaviors. For example, the presence of a school lunch program can encourage students to eat healthier foods. If the school offers physical education classes, it can encourage students to be more physically active.
The growing awareness of the importance of health behaviors is leading to changes in the way people think about health. People are beginning to realize that good health is not just a matter of luck or a matter of chance. It is also a result of the choices they make about their lifestyle.
With the increasing emphasis on health behaviors, people are beginning to look at their lifestyle choices more critically. They are beginning to realize that their lifestyle choices can have a significant impact on their health and well-being. They are beginning to understand that they are not passive recipients of health information, but active participants in their own health.
