It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding family and neighbors that he is considered the rightful property of some single woman. His importance to them is fully established the moment he is accepted into their social circle.
Being a woman of very moderate fortune, my mother had never visited such a family, but there was a very good understanding between us, and I had visited her frequently. She was very proud of the connection, and often told me with great satisfaction that I was the only person of whom she could be certain.
One morning, soon after I had been admitted to the circle of the Netherfield family, I was informed that a party of young people were to be entertained at Netherfield on the following Saturday. My dear Mary had been of the party of some months, but circumstances had lately prevented her from joining them. She was anxious to go, and I was certain she would be much pleased with the offer of a place in the same party.
